GEOPAL is a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) based system useful to plan logistics in agriculture. The system assists European farmers to improve the efficiency during the in-field and inter-field logistic activities such as harvesting, distribution and the bio-production (biomass and agri-food) supply chains.

It is a European project founded by the EU as a part of the Seventh Research Framework Programme (FP7). GEOPAL is financed under the PF7. The official starting of the project was 1st February 2012 and the duration is two years.

Modern agriculture is at the stage of industrial production requiring high precision farming tools to organize the joint work on a field and the transportation of agriculture goods.
Today’s agriculture faces the barrier of information islands when organizing to have different machines work together. Actually there is no solution to organize and optimize the work of a whole fleet. GEOPAL will be able to provide increased operational efficiency, better resource usage and reduction of the risk inherent in the open-environment operations.


The advanced system GEOPAL supports in-field and inter-field agricultural logistic activities:

  • Fleet management and logistics (operations management tools and the required ICT systems)
  • Coordination, mission and route planning functionalities for field machinery
  • Closed loop integrated optimal planning, execution of automated field operations and monitoring

GEOPAL is built on existing modules pre-developed by the partners to design a new prototype which provides high accuracy features thanks to the use of the EGNOS system and GNSS signal.

Work Packages

The work plan is divided into 8 work packages.

The lead of each work package is based within a particular partner.

  • Project Management: coordination, controlling, reporting, continuous support and day-to-day coordination. Lead by CLAAS Agrosystems.
  • Analysis of existing modules and final conceptualization of the new product: requirement specifications, analysis of existing modules, definition of missing and required modules, definition of overall structure and technical infrastructure. Lead by CLAAS Agrosystems.
  • Integrated Planning System: generation of guidance lines, optimal path planning, dynamic multiple-machinery coordination, routing, assignment and definition of system’s interface and data exchange. Lead by Aarhus University (Dept. of Engineering).
  • Development of product: navigation solution for the combine, navigation solution for the transport units, incorporation of system into the telematics server. Lead by LACOS.
  • Integration of the system: set-up system communication and server infrastructure, integration of the planning and routing algorithms into the server, connection of the mobile units. Lead by CLAAS Agrosystems.
  • Product testing and validation: test and validation plan, preparation, execution and examination. Lead by LACOS.
  • Market/Business Plan: Identification of the market potential and clearing the barriers, product line definition, product marketability, business model and financial projections.  Lead by CLAAS Agrosystems.
  • Dissemination of results: International communication, commercial visibility to target groups. Lead by LEE.
